Benedictine University
The institution which stands across the street from St. Procopius Abbey is the living legacy of several generations of Benedictine monks and their tradition of educating and developing young people from diverse ethnic, racial and religious backgrounds. Begun in 1887 as St. Procopius Academy, essentially a high school for young men, the school grew and changed to meet the needs of the students; eventually becoming
St. Procopius College (1890-1971), Illinois Benedictine College (1971-1996), and Benedictine University (1996-present).

Benedictine Values
Benedictine University is one of the nation’s premier small, private universities where there is a strong belief in developing the whole person by providing a solid academic, social and spiritual foundation. The monks who founded Benedictine University embraced the values of their predecessors, who based their lives and work on the Rules of St. Benedict. These Benedictine values include:
— A search for God by oneself and with others;
— A tradition of hospitality;
— An appreciation for living and working in community;
— A concern for the development of each person;
— An emphasis on a life lived in balance;
— A dedication to responsible stewardship of all things; and
— A commitment to academic excellence.

Carry the Light

Carrying The Light
Today, the mission and vision of Benedictine University continue to reflect their Catholic and Benedictine traditions. The light — the values, traditions and the spirit of Benedictine University — that was carried by its founders, is passed on anew to succeeding generations of students. This “passing of the light” provides the Benedictine University community with a sense of connection with the past and direction for the future.
